Small Spaces – Big Ideas

Selecting the right furnishings for small spaces is an art. One misconception that people often have when decorating tiny apartments is that all the focus should be on functionality rather than design. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your home may be short on space, but that doesn’t mean it has to be short on style. Here are a few suggestions to help you create a sense of space in your small place.
1. Light neutral colours tend to open up a room and give it a more spacious feeling.  The use of dark, rich colors has a tendency to make a space appear smaller to the eye.

  2. When choosing smaller sized furniture, avoid pieces that look bulky, as they will create unwanted visual weight. Select upholstery pieces that have raised legs and allow you to see the floor beneath.  This will create a more open and unobstructed feeling in the room. Since most small spaces tend to be box shaped, use your furniture to add some curves and visual interest. Think about using a round cocktail table or a sofa with angled sides.
  3. Strategically hang mirrors in your room to create a feeling of depth or length. Using tables made of glass, acrylic or Lucite give your room a feeling of transparency and allows the eye to roam freely over the room.
  4. Emphasize vertical lines and go vertical with your storage.  Tall, narrow storage systems will help you get the most storage while using the least amount of space.
  5. Select furniture that is multifunctional, like ottomans that can double as a cocktail table, storage or additional seating. Furniture that serves several purposes is essential to modern condo living.
