Each year we wait in anticipation for the announcement of Pantone’s ‘Color of the Year’, which has just been revealed as ‘Ultra Violet.’ This beautiful and dramatic purple sets the tone for a new year, new paint colours, new décor, and is said to provide inspiration for mindfulness, calm, and creative thinking.

“Inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come,” states Pantone in the headline of its annual release.

This unique and complex colour is said to “communicate originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us to the future,” according to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director.

What does purple mean? Historically, purple has been a highly valued colour as it was challenging to create. Purple was originally derived from mollusks if you can believe it, and it took thousands of them to produce only mere grams of the dye. Only the wealthy could afford it. This is why it is usually associated with royalty, wealth, and power.

Purple can be eye catching, fresh, hopeful, and even calming. Its wide range of feeling and emotion means it does not need to be contained to specific places or introduced only in small doses. Pantone added that there is also a spiritual component to Ultra Violet, and it’s been used for meditation purposes and in calming spaces, which could be ideal for our fast-paced world heading into 2018.

If you are wanting to try purple in your décor, try introducing some accent pieces such as throw pillows, candles, or paint a feature wall. The dining room is a great room to introduce purple for an indulgent, luxurious, and classic style. Pop some purple into your aesthetic with dining chairs, or an accent chair from Luxe Home Interiors. You can be bold and inventive with this stunning, and royal colour!

The Pantone Color Institute has been choosing a ‘Color of the Year’ since 2000, which sets the tone for the new year ahead.
