Design Feature: Rustic Modern Design

Designer Portfolio: Janine Lange’s Take On Rustic Modern Design In Victoria, BC

We’re trying something new! Some of our wonderful clients have agreed to let us visit their homes after everything is all finished so that you can see what a complimentary design process can do!

This downtown Victoria condo brings a rustic edge into a modern world by blending natural elements such as wood, stone and leather with the clean and minimalist lines of contemporary design. Rustic Modern Design is the perfect look for a west coast apartment as it’s inspired by the natural beauty of British Columbia while keeping things simple in a smaller space.

Living Room Decor

The living room in this space is within the line of sight from the dining area, so it needs to link to aspects in the open-concept layout. Janine has done a great job adding elements into both spaces to create cohesion while still having separation.

Featured in this home are some of our favourite pieces and brands. You’ll notice the handcrafted sectional from Younger Furniture. It’s called “Super Chill,” and it does create a cozy and relaxed space for quiet evenings after work.

The clean contemporary lines of this sectional sofa help to provide a neutral backdrop to layer other items around, such as the leather Larkin Club Chair from Four Hands

Some of the other items in this living room are:

Dining Room Decor

The dining room shines a spotlight on a few custom builds by Trica Furniture in Montreal, Canada. We love Canadian-made furniture! The Urbana buffet, Soul Dining Table, and Sara Dining Chairs were all custom-made.

The solid oak and metal accents within the pieces give a rustic feeling while being complimentary when paired with the natural walnut of the buffet. The colours and tones in the dining room blend well with the overall palette of the entire home. The materials in the dining set echo the materials and shades on the coffee table, creating a link between the two spaces.

Also seen in this space:

  • The homeowner has added the Rhino art from his Grandfather
  • The bar cart is a personal find from the homeowner to add a personal story.

Home Office Decor

The homeowner also had Janine help redecorate the home office. This office is a space where you can comfortably get a lot of work done. It’s cozy enough to be welcoming without having too many distractions for productivity.

The desk, chair and shelf are from Hooker Furniture’s Crafted Collection. The Tobacco finish on the wood and leather, and the dark gunmetal finish to the frame, give the space an authentic aged character that’s perfect for a home office. The Chance Chair in the corner is from Four Hands and adds an element of mid-century modern to the space to offset the rustic tones.

Other items in the space:

  • Many lighting fixtures throughout the home are from Pacific Coast Lighting.
  • The homeowner has added numerous personal pieces such as family art, books, and upcycled finds to give the space a lived-in and cozy feel.

Janine and the homeowner had a lot of fun working together to create this inviting space that is perfect for hosting friends and family or simply offering a cozy hideaway for a movie night after a long day. The best part of the complementary design process is getting to know clients on a deeper level. These relationships allow our design team to better understand the personality of the client so that their home can represent this. We love being able to provide this level of service and truly get to know people and their homes on a deeper level.
